Internship Blog: Accessibility at Bannockburn
30 Apr 2019
Hello! My name is Kaitlin, I’m a masters student currently studying Museum Education at the University of Glasgow. As part of my programme, I was given the opportunity to take part in a work placement here at the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre.
As a museum placement, Bannockburn is unique- it is not a museum. It is an experience, where you are told the story of the Battle of Bannockburn through 3D imagery and interactive gameplay.
For the past few months I have been working alongside Bannockburn’s excellent learning team to aid in furthering accessibility at Bannockburn. Bannockburn is currently working towards providing early opening days and sensory bags to better serve their visitors, and it was part of my placement to assist in researching and implementing this.
The brilliant thing about this placement was being able to work with different parts of the Bannockburn team, from the learning team to front of house, retail to battlemaster. One of my favourite bits of my experience was working with the learning team during the weapons and armour handling sessions - I enjoyed watching the children (and adults!) interact with the various replica weapons and armour, and helping them try on chainmail and helmets and such.
Many thanks to the Bannockburn team for an excellent experience, and for letting me play with swords!
